Stourbridge sits on rising ground between the Stour valley and the Clent and Hagley hills, so a flat spot for a table and chairs is not something every garden gives you for free. We build patios, paths and paved areas that create one, with a firm base, paving set to drain and steps where the levels change.
Whether the house is a period villa or a 20th century estate home, we begin by looking at the lie of the land, then agree a layout with you. Digging, building the base, paving and finishing follow, and old material is taken away.

In Stourbridge a garden often rises or falls away from the back door, and the answer is not always to dig it all flat. Sometimes a smaller level patio close to the house, with a couple of shallow steps up to the lawn, is simpler and looks better than a large terrace needing a tall retaining wall. We talk through both before you commit.
Where the ground does need cutting back, we remove the soft topsoil, form the level and support the uphill edge so soil cannot slump onto the paving. We then build the sub-base in compacted layers. A hilly site punishes a thin base, so we spend our effort there, where it stays hidden but matters most. Water running down from higher ground is directed away from the house.

Older Stourbridge houses often have brick or stone walls, bay windows and mature planting, and the paving should sit comfortably alongside them. Natural stone has a traditional character, sandstone-look slabs are a calmer choice, and porcelain suits a plainer, more modern garden. We cut neatly around walls, drain covers and steps so the patio looks as if it belongs. Pointing is matched to the paving, not left as an afterthought.
Mature trees add shade and beauty but drop leaves and sometimes send roots near the surface. We watch for large roots when digging and avoid cutting through anything important to a healthy tree. A patio under trees can go green in damp weather, so we explain which surface cleans easily and how to keep it looking fresh. Garden furniture sits steadily on any of them.
The first step is to tell us where in Stourbridge you are, what the garden is like and how you want to use it. We will look at levels, access and drainage, then suggest a layout and materials. We also cover Wollaston, Amblecote, Pedmore, Lye and Halesowen, so a nearby address is no problem. When the work is done, we clear away waste.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.
We look at the job before we price it, so you know what is involved.
Branches, clippings and rubbish from our jobs are cleared and the garden left tidy.

Not always. A smaller patio set where the ground is flattest, with steps up to the lawn, can avoid one. If the slope is steep, we may support the uphill edge. We look at the garden and explain which approach makes sense.
We take care around trees. If we meet large roots we stop, adjust the layout or the depth, and avoid cutting anything vital to the tree. Where the roots are close, a flexible design often works better than forcing a rigid one.
Natural stone or sandstone-look slabs usually sit well with period brick and stone. Porcelain can work for a cleaner modern look. We can show you samples against your walls, so you can judge colour and texture in your own light.
