Sparkhill's Victorian terraces and bay-fronted houses around the Stratford Road were built with modest rear gardens, so a single tall tree can end up dominating the whole plot. We carry out tree surgery here, including reductions, thinning, deadwood removal and taking trees down piece by piece. Each job begins with a look at the tree, the access and what stands close to it.
We are based in Hall Green, just up the road, so Sparkhill is easy for us to reach. Tell us what concerns you about the tree, whether it is size, shade, dead branches or damage, and we will explain plainly what can sensibly be done.

In a Sparkhill terrace the garden is often narrow and the house is close, so a tree that has grown unchecked can press on walls, gutters and neighbouring fences. Sycamore, ash and old fruit trees are common in plots like these, and conifers planted as a neat screen can end up blocking light from every window. A healthy tree can often be kept, but at a smaller size.
Reduction and thinning are the usual tools. A reduction shortens the outer growth to bring the tree back in scale, while thinning opens the crown so that light and wind pass through. If a tree is leaning, hollow or already failing, we will tell you honestly that removal is the safer choice, and explain why before any cutting starts. Either way, you will know the reasons before we pick up a saw.

Many Sparkhill houses have only a tight passage beside the house, or no rear access at all, which rules out bringing in large machinery. Our climbers work up through the tree and dismantle it in sections, lowering each piece on ropes so that conservatories, sheds, fences and the neighbours' plants are not struck. Timber is carried out by hand along whatever route exists, and we protect that route as we go.
Branches are chipped where we can and the wood is cut up and taken away. Dead or split limbs hanging over a path or a neighbour's garden can be removed without touching the rest of the tree. After a storm, tell us straight away if something looks unsafe, and we will treat it as an emergency and make the area safe first.
Before we cut in Sparkhill we check with the council whether the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or lies in a conservation area, since that decides whether consent is needed first. We also look for nesting birds, overhead cables and anything that affects neighbours. When the work is done, the timber and green waste leave with us and the garden is swept. We also cover Hall Green, Sparkbrook and Springfield.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.
We look at the job before we price it, so you know what is involved.
Branches, clippings and rubbish from our jobs are cleared and the garden left tidy.

Yes, in most cases. We climb the tree and take it down in small sections, lowering each piece under control, then carry the wood out by hand through the house or a side passage. We lay protection along the route and clear everything away afterwards.
Talking to your neighbour first usually helps. Branches over your boundary can generally be cut back to the line, though the tree must not be harmed badly and a protected tree needs consent first. We can advise on what is reasonable and carry out the work.
Warning signs include dead branches, fungus at the base, cracks in the trunk, a new lean and soil lifting around the roots. None of these proves a tree is failing, but each deserves a proper look. We can inspect it and tell you whether pruning, monitoring or removal makes sense.
