Harborne is full of grown-up gardens, and with them come tall oaks, limes, beeches and long-grown hedges that have outgrown their spot. J and Son Trees and Landscapes carries out tree surgery across B17, from a light crown reduction on a front-garden tree to the sectional dismantling of a large one behind the house.
Every job starts with a look at the tree, the access and what sits underneath it. We explain what we would cut and why, then do the work, clear the timber and green waste, and leave the garden tidy.

Many Harborne houses were built with generous gardens, and the trees planted around them have had a long time to grow. A tree that looked modest beside a bay window can end up shading bedrooms, dropping heavy branches near the roof or pressing against a boundary wall. Reducing the crown, thinning dense growth and taking out dead or crossing branches usually brings the tree back into proportion without ruining its shape.
Where a tree is too large or too unsound to keep, we take it down in sections, roping each piece so it never swings onto a conservatory, garage or neighbour's fence. Cutting tall trees close to buildings takes patience, and we plan the order of cuts before anyone climbs, choosing rigging points that keep the weight away from glass, roof tiles and fences. We aim to leave a tidy, safe result that you can enjoy straight away.

Parts of Harborne sit inside conservation areas, and individual trees may carry a Tree Preservation Order. Either one can mean you need permission, or must give the council notice, before any cutting starts. Checking with the local council is always the first step, and we are glad to talk you through what to ask and which details they will want to see before they reply.
We also work around nesting birds, which is a real consideration in spring and early summer when leafy Harborne trees are busy with them. If a nest is active, the work waits or changes, and we will tell you plainly when that happens. Other things we look at beforehand are overhead cables, the neighbours' side of the fence and the easiest way to carry equipment through to a back garden.
Tree work only feels finished when the garden looks like nobody was there. We chip the brash, cut and remove the logs and timber you do not want, and take the green waste away with us. If you would like logs kept for a stove or fire, tell us and we will stack them. We also cover Edgbaston, Bearwood and Quinton, so if a neighbour in Harborne has a similar tree in mind, ask us to look at both on the same visit.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.
We look at the job before we price it, so you know what is involved.
Branches, clippings and rubbish from our jobs are cleared and the garden left tidy.
Call, or send photos on WhatsApp, and we will come back to you.

It depends on the tree. If it has a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, the council usually needs to approve or be notified first. Check with them before cutting anything. We can look at the tree with you and explain what work would be reasonable to apply for.
Yes. For trees near roofs, conservatories or garages we dismantle in controlled sections, lowering each piece on ropes instead of dropping it. We plan the sequence, protect what sits below and check for cables first. It takes more care than an open-garden felling, but it is routine for us.
Yes, timber and green waste are taken away as part of the job, and the garden is swept up afterwards. If you want logs left for firewood, say so when we visit and we will leave them stacked where you would like them.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will get back to you to arrange a visit and a free, no-obligation quote. Photos sent on WhatsApp help.
