Birmingham has an unusually large number of street and garden trees, and a great many of them are beside houses, garages and fences. J and Son provides tree surgery in Birmingham for the trees that are too big, too close or too risky to handle yourself, including reductions, thinning, deadwood removal and full dismantling.
Our base is in Hall Green, which makes us a local firm across much of the city. We look at the tree, the access and the neighbours, then explain the options before any ropes go up, so you know exactly what will happen and why it is needed.

Work in Birmingham varies from street to street. A Victorian terrace may have a narrow yard and one overgrown tree next to a boundary wall, while an inter-war suburb may have a long garden with several mature trees and tall conifers. Each situation needs a different way of working, and that starts with a proper look on site. We are happy to look at a single tree or a whole row of them along a boundary.
In tight spaces we climb and dismantle in sections, passing timber down piece by piece. In larger gardens there may be more room to work, though weight and overhang still matter. Either way, the goal is a tree that is safe, or a clear gap where it used to be. We only recommend removal when reduction or thinning would not leave a safe, healthy tree behind.

Not every tree in Birmingham needs to come down. If it is healthy but too large, a crown reduction shortens the outer growth so it sits comfortably in the garden. Thinning opens the canopy and lets light and wind pass through, and deadwood removal takes out the branches most likely to fall. A good pruning job should leave the tree looking natural, not butchered.
We prune with the tree's health in mind, using clean cuts in the right places instead of hacking it back. If the tree is in poor condition, we will tell you honestly. Damage after high winds is dealt with too, and a limb that is hanging dangerously can be treated as an emergency. Anything we cannot do safely from the ground or by climbing, we will explain clearly.
Birmingham has many conservation areas, and individual trees across the city may carry a Tree Preservation Order. Before cutting, we check with the council so that you do not break the rules by accident. We also look for nesting birds and nearby power lines, and when the job is finished we take away all the timber and green waste and leave the garden tidy.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.
We look at the job before we price it, so you know what is involved.
Branches, clippings and rubbish from our jobs are cleared and the garden left tidy.
Call, or send photos on WhatsApp, and we will come back to you.

If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, you normally do. Many Birmingham streets fall into one or the other. We check the position before any work is booked in, and we tell you what we find in plain terms.
Yes. Narrow yards are common in Birmingham, and we are used to working in them. Our climbers take the tree down in short sections and lower each one carefully, with walls, windows and neighbouring property protected throughout. Debris is cleared as we go.
We look for signs such as dead wood, fungal growth, cracks, heavy leaning and damage to the trunk. A healthy tree that is only too large usually needs reducing, not removing. If it is unsafe, we explain why and show you what we found.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will get back to you to arrange a visit and a free, no-obligation quote. Photos sent on WhatsApp help.
