Kings Heath streets are lined with Victorian and Edwardian terraces and inter-war semis, and many back gardens hold a tree that was planted small and is now far from it. J and Son Trees and Landscapes carries out tree surgery here in B14, from tidy reductions to the careful removal of trees that have become a risk.
We start by walking the garden with you, looking at the tree, the house, the neighbours' fences and the way in. Then we agree what will be cut, do the work with proper climbing and rigging, and take every bit of waste away afterwards.

A tall conifer behind a Kings Heath semi can block light from the kitchen and bedrooms, and its roots and weight add worry in wet weather. Where it makes sense we reduce the height and spread, taking out thick or dead growth so the tree is lighter and sheds less in strong wind. Where it does not, we explain that removal is the cleaner answer.
Gardens near the Highbury Park estate and the streets off the High Street often hold older broadleaf trees as well, such as sycamore, ash and cherry. These need different handling from conifers. We prune to sound wood, make clean cuts, and avoid taking off so much that the tree is stressed, because a ruined shape and a sickly tree help nobody, and the next storm will find the weak spot.

Plenty of terraced gardens here can only be reached through the house or down a narrow shared passage. That is a normal part of our work in Kings Heath and nothing to worry about. We bring the gear in by hand, rope the cut sections down instead of dropping them, and lay protection over patios and lawns so the garden does not take the damage, and we clear as we go instead of leaving it all until the end.
Neighbours matter on a street of close-set houses. Branches often overhang next door, and a tall tree may be closer to someone else's glass than yours. We talk through who needs to be told and how much notice they would like, check for cables, and work out where each piece will land before the first cut. A short chat beforehand saves awkward conversations over the fence later, and neighbours are usually glad to be asked.
Before cutting, check with the council for a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area, since either can stop work without permission. We do not cut active bird nests, and we explain it plainly if that changes the timing. At the end we remove the timber and green waste and sweep up. We also work in Moseley, Hall Green and Billesley, so Kings Heath neighbours can book together if it helps.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.
We look at the job before we price it, so you know what is involved.
Branches, clippings and rubbish from our jobs are cleared and the garden left tidy.
Call, or send photos on WhatsApp, and we will come back to you.

Yes. We take trees down in small sections, lowering each piece on ropes so nothing hits the roof, wall or neighbouring garden. We look at access and cables first and tell you how we plan to do it, so you know exactly what will happen on the day.
Sometimes. If the tree still has healthy green growth lower down, a reduction can lighten it and let light through. If most of it is bare inside, cutting back may leave it looking poor, and removal is usually the better choice. We will tell you which applies.
No. We chip or load the branches, remove the timber and green waste you do not want, and sweep paths and lawns. If you would rather keep logs for burning, we can stack them to one side. The aim is that the garden looks neat when we leave.
