Handsworth is a place of large Victorian houses and long terraces, and its gardens vary just as much, from sizeable lawns near Handsworth Park to compact yards at the back of a terrace. We build patios, paths and paved areas that make a hard-working outdoor space out of whichever you have.
Each job begins with a visit, so we can see the space, the trees and the access, and agree the layout with you. Then we excavate, lay a compacted sub-base, set the paving with a fall for drainage and finish the edges. The old surface and spoil are cleared away.

A terraced yard may be only a few metres across, yet a patio there can transform it. We keep the design uncluttered, use one surface with crisp edges and leave space for a bench, a few pots and a clothes line. A well-drained, level surface also stops the yard turning into a puddle after rain, which is common with worn concrete. We discuss it first.
Big mature trees are a feature of Handsworth, and larger gardens often have them close to the house. Their roots, shade and leaf fall influence where a patio belongs, so we check them first. Some roads also lie in conservation areas, so it is worth asking about local rules before changing the look of a front garden. We keep roots in mind.

Under any paving in Handsworth we dig out to a sound depth and lay a compacted sub-base, before setting the surface with a slight fall away from the house walls. That detail matters on Victorian brickwork, where water standing against the base of a wall causes damp. Joints are pointed, and edges are finished neatly where the paving meets steps and borders.
For the surface, natural stone suits the character of older houses, sandstone-look paving gives a similar feel with a more even colour, and porcelain offers a modern, easy-clean finish. We bring samples so you can judge colour against the brickwork. Where old paving or concrete needs to go, we break it out and load it ourselves. Spoil and broken slabs go with us when we leave.
Terraced houses in Handsworth often have no rear access, so everything comes through the house or a narrow shared passage. We plan that route, protect floors and walls, and move materials carefully by barrow. We also cover Perry Barr, Great Barr and Smethwick, so ask if you live close by and want a look at the space. We sweep up each day.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.

Yes, and it is a common job. We keep the design simple, build it on a proper base and give it a fall that carries rain away from the house. Access is planned so materials can be carried in without damage.
We carry them through the house or a shared passage by barrow, in manageable loads, protecting floors and walls as we go. We agree the route with you before starting and clear everything away at the end. We protect the route.
They can, so we check as we dig. We avoid cutting major roots, adjust the layout where needed and tell you honestly if a position is likely to cause trouble. Choosing an easy-clean surface also helps beneath shade.
