Hedge Trimming - J and Son Trees and Landscapes

Hedge Trimming in Birmingham and the West Midlands

Hedge trimming is the cutting and shaping of the sides and top of a hedge to keep it neat, to control its height and width, or to bring an overgrown one back under control. We trim privet, laurel, beech, Leylandii and other conifers and mixed hedges, working from Hall Green across Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull and north Worcestershire.

We can come for a one-off cut or return on a regular basis, whichever suits the hedge and your garden. We look at the hedge first, explain what we would take off, then cut it cleanly, take away every clipping and sweep the path or drive. The result is a straight, tidy boundary with no mess left behind.

Keeping hedges under control

Hedge Trimming - garden example

Front hedges on Victorian terraces and inter-war semis are often the first thing people see, and a hedge left to sprawl soon blocks paths, narrows pavements and hides the house. Long back gardens have hedges too, and when they grow tall they shade the lawn and borders. Regular trimming keeps them dense, healthy and at the height you want. A neat hedge also lifts the look of the whole street.

Different hedges need different handling. Privet and beech respond well to frequent light cutting, laurel needs careful cutting with shears or secateurs to avoid torn leaves, and conifers such as Leylandii grow very quickly and can reach a huge height if left. We adjust the method to the hedge in front of us. That keeps each hedge healthy and thick, not ragged. Regular visits stop small jobs becoming big ones.

Overgrown hedges and what a visit involves

Many hedges reach us after a long gap. We can reduce the height and width, take back the sides and restore a clean line, though some hedges need to be done in stages. Conifers in particular will not regrow from old bare wood, so we cut within the green growth and tell you honestly if a hedge has gone too far to shape. Staged cutting is gentler on the plant.

On the day, we cut the sides and top to the line we agreed, working from steps or platforms where the hedge is high. Clippings are raked up and taken away, and paths, drives and borders are swept so nothing is left behind. If your hedge borders a neighbour, a footpath or a canal, we take care over where the cuttings fall. Nothing is left lying around.

Before the hedge is cut

Birds nest in hedges from spring into summer, and it is an offence to disturb an active nest. We check before cutting and will leave a section or return later if we find one. If you are thinking about a big reduction, a quiet period in autumn or winter is often the kindest time for the hedge and for wildlife. Autumn also gives a clearer view of the shape.

Think about the height and width you want, who owns each side of the boundary and whether you need regular visits. Tell us about access along side passages, steep gardens or anything that would make the job awkward. Agreeing neighbours' wishes in advance avoids disputes, and a clear plan means we can cut the hedge exactly as you want it. We are happy to talk it through first.

FAQs

Common Questions

How often should a hedge be trimmed?

It depends on the type. Fast-growing hedges such as privet and Leylandii usually need cutting a couple of times a year, while slower ones like beech may only need one tidy. Regular visits keep a hedge dense and manageable, and we can set up a routine that suits it.

Can you cut back a hedge that has got out of control?

Yes. We can reduce height and width and restore a clean shape, sometimes over more than one visit. Conifers do not regrow from bare brown wood, so we cut within the green growth and tell you honestly what is achievable before we start.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes. We rake up all the cuttings, take them away with the rest of the green waste and sweep the path, drive or border so the area is left tidy. You do not need to arrange a skip or deal with anything yourself.

Can you trim hedges in the bird nesting season?

We take great care. Birds nest in hedges from spring into summer and active nests must not be disturbed, so we check before cutting and leave or delay the work if we find one. Major reductions are better left until autumn or winter.
