West Bromwich has older terraces close to the centre and inter-war housing further out, each with its own kind of garden. Such a space rarely suits a complicated pattern, and plain paving tends to make a small garden feel larger and calmer. Pale or mid-tone slabs also bounce a little light into a garden overshadowed by the houses on either side.
Inter-war semis usually have more width and depth. That gives room to separate a dining area from a path and still keep a good stretch of lawn, with borders left alone. Porcelain and sandstone-look slabs both work well on this foundation, and neat cuts at walls and drain covers complete it.
