Shirley is known for its inter-war and later family homes with long back gardens, and those gardens tend to end in a row of conifers, a few old fruit trees or a hedge that has run wild. J and Son Trees and Landscapes provides tree surgery in Shirley and across B90, from light pruning to complete removal.
We look at each tree, give you a clear explanation of what we would do and why, and carry out the work using proper climbing and rigging. When we are finished, we take every scrap of waste away and leave the garden neat.

A long garden hides trouble. The trees at the bottom are out of sight, so nobody notices a dead limb, a split union or a conifer that has doubled in height until a gale does the telling. We climb up, inspect the tree properly and remove deadwood and weak growth, then reduce the crown if the tree is simply too heavy for its roots. Many of these trees have never had any attention, so a first visit often reveals more than the owner expected, and it is better to find that out calmly than in a storm.
Getting machinery and timber back along a narrow side path is part of the job in Shirley, and it needs planning. Often there is no vehicle access beyond the front drive, so we cut everything small, carry it by hand and bring it round to our truck. It takes planning, but it keeps your lawn and borders from being churned up by wheels or heavy boots.

Shirley's rows of conifers can create a solid green wall, great for privacy and less welcome when they shade the neighbour's patio. We talk through what each side wants, and what the tree can tolerate, then decide whether to trim, reduce or remove. Neighbours in Shirley often agree on more than they expect once the options are explained. Cutting conifers hard rarely goes well, so we avoid cuts that leave brown bare wood facing the lawn.
Where trees sit near the boundary, we check who owns them and what is allowed. Some may carry protection orders, so the council is the right place to ask first, and a short call can save you from a costly mistake. Nesting birds are another reason to be careful; active nests are protected and we leave them alone, adjusting the plan or the date as needed.
After the work in Shirley we chip the brash, load the logs and green waste, and tidy the lawn and paths. If you want firewood, we can leave some. We also cover Hall Green, Monkspath and Dorridge, so if a friend nearby is worried about a tree, we can usually look at both gardens in a single visit.

Yes. We carry cut timber by hand along side paths and load it at the front. It takes longer than a drive-up job but needs no machinery on your lawn. We check the route first and tell you what to expect.
Look for green growth along the branches. If the lower trunk is bare and brown, hard cutting probably will not recover. We examine each tree before cutting, and advise whether trimming, staged reduction or removal gives a sound result for your garden, one that you will still be happy with after a few seasons.
You can generally cut back branches that overhang your boundary, but not take down a tree on their side. If the whole tree needs to go, ownership and consent matter. We will help you work out the position first.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will get back to you to arrange a visit and a free, no-obligation quote. Photos sent on WhatsApp help.
