A low maintenance garden still looks good, but asks far less of you. We design and build gardens that need little weekly upkeep, using paving and gravel, artificial or easy-care lawns, raised beds, borders of tough planting, weed-suppressing membranes, edging and garden lighting. The aim is a space you can enjoy rather than a list of jobs waiting for the weekend.
We work from Hall Green, Birmingham, and cover Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull and north Worcestershire. People ask us for this kind of garden for many reasons: busy working lives, mobility changes, a rental or inherited property, or simply being tired of mowing and weeding. Whatever your reason, we design around how your household uses the space.

Low maintenance does not mean no maintenance, and it should not mean a bleak yard of paving. It means choosing surfaces and plants that cope well on their own. Hard surfaces replace worn grass, weed-suppressing membrane under gravel keeps beds clear, and neat edging stops materials from drifting into the wrong places. The right mix depends on the size of the garden, the amount of sun, and how much time you really want to spend outside tending it.
Planting still has a place. Tough, well-chosen shrubs and perennials, set in prepared ground, need little attention once settled. Raised beds keep growing areas compact and easy to reach without bending. Lighting extends the evening use of the garden. We balance these parts so the garden feels green and welcoming, not like a car park. Careful edging between lawn, gravel and beds also keeps the overall look crisp, even when you have not touched the garden for a few weeks.

We begin by looking at the garden and asking how you use it. Do children play there, do you entertain, do you want to grow a few vegetables, or just look at it from the kitchen window? We explain what we would do, which materials suit the space, and what upkeep you should still expect to do. This conversation shapes everything that follows, because a garden that looks good but does not suit your routine will soon become a chore.
The work follows a sensible order: clearing the old garden, preparing and levelling the ground, laying membranes and bases, building paved areas, beds and edging, then adding lawn, gravel and planting. We take the waste away as we go and leave everything tidy. Garden lighting can be planned in at the start so cables are not an afterthought. We agree the order of work with you beforehand, so you know when each part will happen and how access to the house is affected.

Victorian terraces often have small yards where a mix of paving, a few raised beds and some containers works well. Inter-war semis with long gardens can be simplified into zones, with a patio near the house, easy lawn in the middle and low-effort borders further down. Slopes may suit terraced beds or gravel. In smaller gardens, climbers on fences and a few well-chosen pots can add greenery without adding much work.
Think about shade from mature trees, which affects planting and may leave moss on hard surfaces, and about drainage, since non-porous surfaces need a plan for water. Conservation areas can have rules on boundaries and trees. If an overgrown hedge or tree is the cause of the upkeep, we can deal with it as part of the project. We also look at how rainwater runs across the site, so that new surfaces do not leave you with puddles or damp patches.

It does not need to. A good design mixes paving, gravel, lawn and tough planting so the garden has texture and colour through the seasons. We choose plants that cope well with local conditions, and plan edges and lighting so the whole space feels finished and welcoming.
It can suit shady, heavily used or awkward lawns where grass struggles. It needs a properly prepared, level, compacted base to look right. Some people prefer the feel of real turf, so we can talk through the trade-offs and options for your garden.
We lay a weed-suppressing membrane over prepared ground before the gravel or planting goes in, and use solid edging to hold materials in place. Occasional weeds can still arrive on windblown seed, but they are far easier to remove than in open soil.
Yes. That is where we start. We ask who uses the garden, when, and for what, then shape the layout, surfaces and planting to fit. A garden for a family with small children will look different from one for a couple who want somewhere quiet.
