A good lawn in Stourbridge starts with the ground rather than the grass. Gardens here range from period houses with long-standing borders to 20th century estates, and many sit on a slope. We turf new lawns, lay artificial grass, renovate worn ones and edge them cleanly, and we begin every job by reading the levels and the drainage.
If your lawn is patchy, boggy in winter or simply not worth mowing any more, we can look at what is going wrong and suggest the simplest way to put it right, whether that is repair, new turf or a different surface altogether.

The land around Stourbridge is hilly, with the Hagley and Clent hills not far away, so plenty of gardens fall away from the house or are split into terraces. A slope changes how a lawn is prepared. Soil can wash downhill after heavy rain, low corners collect water, and turf laid on a poorly graded bed will slip or sink in patches.
We grade the ground so water has somewhere to go, firm it properly and lay turf in a staggered pattern with tight joints. Where a lawn stays soggy, we look at whether the cause is compaction, a low spot or a lack of fall, because simply putting new turf on top of a wet problem only repeats it a season later. Retaining edges are checked too.

Mature trees are part of what makes Stourbridge gardens pleasant, but they are hard on grass. Shade, leaf drop and roots close to the surface mean a lawn under a big tree thins out and mosses over. We do not pretend turf will thrive in deep shade where it never will, and we would rather say so before you spend money on it.
In those areas we may suggest a lighter touch: scarifying and overseeding with a shade-tolerant mix, keeping the lawn edge back from the roots, or laying artificial grass over a carefully built base where grass simply will not grow. Any work close to roots is done by hand so that we do not damage the tree or weaken its hold on the ground.
Edging is what makes a Stourbridge lawn look cared for. We cut clean lines along borders and paths, and where it helps we fit edging strips so the lawn stays in shape and is easier to mow. Whether you are in Wollaston, Amblecote or Pedmore, a tidy edge costs little effort and changes how the whole garden looks.

From our base in Hall Green we work across Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull and parts of Worcestershire. Choose your area.
Yes, provided the ground is graded and firmed first. On a steeper bank we lay the turf across the slope, stagger the joints and sometimes peg it until it roots. Very steep sections may be better planted or terraced, and we will say so honestly.
Common causes are compacted soil, a hollow where water gathers, or a lack of fall away from the house. We probe the ground to find the cause. Sometimes levelling and scarifying is enough, and sometimes the base needs reworking before any new grass goes on.
It can, where grass will not grow in the shade. The base must be built carefully around the roots, with no heavy digging close to the trunk, and the surface should be kept clear of leaves. We will check the tree and the roots before suggesting it.
