Landscaping - J and Son Trees and Landscapes

Landscaping in Birmingham and the West Midlands

Landscaping covers the work that changes how a whole garden looks and how you use it. That can mean clearing an overgrown plot, reshaping levels, laying a patio and paths, putting in a lawn, fencing the boundary, building borders and adding gravel, planting, walls or steps. We plan the parts so they fit together, rather than treating each one as a separate job.

We are based in Hall Green, Birmingham, and work across Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull and north Worcestershire. Small jobs are welcome as well as full makeovers. If you only want a path put in or one tired corner sorted, that is a perfectly good reason to get in touch. This page explains how we approach the work and what to think about first.

When a garden needs more than a tidy-up

Landscaping by J and Son

Most people call us when something about the garden has stopped working. The lawn is waterlogged, the sloping ground is awkward to walk on, the borders have been taken over by weeds, or the patio has sunk and cracked. Sometimes the garden has simply never been finished, and the previous owners left bare soil, a few odd shrubs and a shed in the wrong place behind them.

Landscaping makes sense when several of these problems overlap, because the fixes tend to affect each other. Changing a level moves the drainage, a new patio changes where the lawn edge sits, and fencing decides how much privacy the planting needs to give. Looking at the whole space first saves doing the same ground twice, and it usually gives a better-looking result. It also helps you decide what matters most if the budget needs to be spread over more than one season.

What a visit and the work involve

Landscaping - garden example

We start by looking at the job with you. We walk the garden, note the levels, the access, the drainage and anything you want to keep, and ask how your household actually uses the space. Then we explain what we would do, in plain terms, and talk through the order of work so you know what to expect before anything starts on site. If something turns up once the ground is opened, such as an old foundation or poor drainage, we tell you at once and explain the options.

Once the plan is agreed we do the work ourselves: clearing, digging out, building the hard surfaces, then lawns, borders and planting. Waste and spoil are taken away as we go, and when we finish the garden is left tidy, with the edges neat and nothing left lying around. Larger gardens are often tackled in stages, so the household can carry on using the house and the outside space.

Gardens across the West Midlands

Landscaping by J and Son

The area has a real mix of gardens. Victorian terraces tend to have narrow, enclosed back gardens where every metre counts, while inter-war semis often have long gardens that can be divided into areas for sitting, growing and play. Hills and slopes are common, so retaining walls, steps and drainage matter more here than they would on flat ground, and they are worth planning early. Many people find it helps to think of the garden as a series of outdoor rooms with different jobs.

Canal corridors, mature trees and conservation areas add their own considerations. Roots affect where you can dig and build, shade changes what will grow, and some areas have extra rules on boundaries and trees. If tree work or hedge removal is needed first, we can usually deal with that as part of the same plan, which keeps the whole project simpler. Access can matter too, as narrow side passages limit what machinery and materials can be brought in.

FAQs

Common Questions

Can you do a small landscaping job, not a full makeover?

Yes. Plenty of our enquiries are for a single patio, a new path, a fence run or a lawn repair. Tell us what you want and we will look at it. If it makes sense to do more while we are there, we will say so, but there is no pressure to expand the job.

Do you take away the waste and old materials?

Yes. Soil, turf, old paving, broken fencing and green waste are cleared from site as part of the work. We keep the working area as tidy as we can while we go, and leave the garden neat when the job is finished, so you are not left to deal with it.

Can landscaping be done in stages?

Often, yes. A large garden can be split into phases, for example hard surfaces first and planting later. We would talk through a sensible order with you so that earlier work is not damaged by later work, and so the garden stays usable in between.

What should I think about before work starts?

Decide how you want to use the garden, what you want to keep, and what bothers you now. Check whether your property sits in a conservation area or has trees with protection. Think about access for materials, and speak to neighbours if a shared boundary is involved.
