Handsworth has large Victorian houses, long terraces and some seriously big trees, many of them growing close to buildings and pavements. J and Son provides tree surgery in Handsworth to manage that growth safely, with reductions, thinning, removal of deadwood and careful dismantling of trees that can no longer be kept.
Handsworth Park and the surrounding streets show how well trees can do in this part of Birmingham, and also how large they get. We look at what is growing in your garden, explain your options, and agree the plan with you before any climbing starts.

The solid Victorian houses of Handsworth were built with generous gardens, and the trees planted or self-seeded since then are now very large. A big sycamore or lime next to a tall brick house can shade rooms, loosen roof tiles, fill gutters and put heavy limbs over neighbouring land. Roots can also push up paths and boundary walls. None of this usually happens overnight, which is why many owners notice the trouble late.
A crown reduction, thinning or the removal of the worst branches often brings the problem under control without losing the tree. If it is too close to the building or too far gone, we explain why removal is safer, and what will be involved in taking it down. Either way you get a straight answer before any decision is made. We do not recommend removal lightly.

Many Handsworth terraces have narrow back gardens, with trees leaning toward several properties at once. That makes neighbours a real part of the job. We tell you what we plan to do, work carefully over the boundary line, and take the tree down in sections so that nothing lands on a neighbouring roof or conservatory. We also leave neighbours' gardens as we found them.
Access is usually through the house or a shared passage, so we carry tools and timber by hand and use the chipper where it can be reached. After storms, broken limbs can be left hanging over gardens, and if that has happened we can treat the job as an emergency. Anything torn off by wind is removed first. The remains are cut up and taken away with the rest of the waste.
Parts of Handsworth lie in conservation areas, so we check with Birmingham City Council about notices and Tree Preservation Orders before any cutting. We look for nesting birds and overhead lines, and we also cover Perry Barr and Great Barr. At the end, the timber and green waste are removed and the garden is left clean. Nothing is left behind.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.
We look at the job before we price it, so you know what is involved.
Branches, clippings and rubbish from our jobs are cleared and the garden left tidy.

Yes. We climb the tree and take it down in short sections, lowering each piece so it does not touch the neighbouring roofs or fences. We agree the route out for the timber with you first, and check for protection before any cutting starts.
Not necessarily. Sometimes the answer is to reduce the tree, adjust the path or monitor it. We look at the species, its health and how close the roots are to the building before we say whether removing it is really justified.
No. Trees on the pavement or highway normally belong to the council, and only they can authorise work on them. If a branch from one is hanging over your property, we suggest reporting it to the council, who can arrange for it to be dealt with.
