A tree that suits a Sparkhill back garden at planting time can end up crowding the house, shading the lawn and dropping leaves into every gutter. Careful pruning keeps it in proportion. We shape and thin garden trees, take out deadwood and leave a clean, natural outline that the tree can live with for seasons to come.
Most of our Sparkhill work is on fruit trees, ornamentals and the odd large garden tree in a small plot. We look at what the tree needs first, then agree what to take off before we start. Nothing is cut that does not have a reason.

The streets off the Stratford Road are mostly Victorian terraces and bay-fronted houses, and the rear gardens are small to medium. In Sparkhill a single tree can dominate the whole plot. Our pruning is aimed at easing that pressure, lifting a low canopy so you can use the space beneath, or shortening branches that lean over a neighbour's fence and drop leaves on their side.
Light is usually the main complaint. We thin dense crowns so daylight reaches the windows and the borders again, rather than just hacking height off the top. Thinning keeps the tree's natural form, and it lets wind pass through the canopy instead of pushing against it, which matters for older trees growing in tight yards. Where a tree sits close to a wall, we also keep the cuts well away from the brickwork.

Access is often the practical puzzle around Sparkhill. Many houses have only a narrow side passage, so everything we cut has to come out through the house or along that gap. We plan the route beforehand, protect paths and plants as we go, and cut the material small enough to carry easily without scraping walls or damaging the bay windows. It also keeps the job quiet and tidy for the neighbours on either side.
When the work is finished we sweep up and take the green waste away, so you are not left with a heap of branches in a small garden. If you would like logs from a larger limb we can leave some, though in most terrace plots in Sparkhill there is simply no room to store them. Anything small enough goes into the chipper bag or our van straight away.
Winter suits many trees, while fruit trees can need a different season, so we choose the time to suit the species. Birds nest in spring and summer, and we check for active nests before any cut, waiting if we find one. We also cover Hall Green and Small Heath, and the same approach applies there. Tell us what bothers you about your Sparkhill tree and we will advise honestly on what is worth doing.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.
We look at the job before we price it, so you know what is involved.
Branches, clippings and rubbish from our jobs are cleared and the garden left tidy.

Yes. Narrow passages are normal for Sparkhill terraces. We cut branches into manageable lengths, carry them out by hand and protect the ground and walls on the way. We will look at the access when we visit and tell you if anything affects how we work.
It depends on the species and its health. As a rule we avoid removing more than a modest portion of the canopy at once, because heavy cuts stress the tree and encourage weak regrowth. We will explain what we plan to remove and why.
Pruning slows and shapes growth but does not stop it. Regular light work keeps the tree in proportion and is better than a large cut every so often. If a tree is simply wrong for the space, we will say so plainly.
