Most gardens along the roads off the Stratford Road in Sparkhill are modest in size, which makes the lawn the main feature of the whole space. We lay new turf, fit artificial grass, renovate tired lawns and cut crisp edges, working to a plan that suits the size of your garden and the way your household uses it day to day.
A small lawn leaves little room to hide poor work. Levels, drainage and the quality of the base show up quickly, so we spend our time on preparation before any turf or grass goes down. Tell us what bothers you about the garden now and we will explain what we would do about it.

Victorian terraces and bay-fronted houses in Sparkhill usually have a narrow side passage and a rear garden of small to medium size. That affects how we work. Old turf, soil and spoil have to be carried out by hand or with small barrows, and new turf is brought in the same way, so we plan the job around the route through the passage or house rather than hoping for open access.
Because the space is tight, we run the job in stages. The old lawn is lifted and cleared first, the ground is forked and levelled, and only then do rolls of turf or the artificial base go in. Doing it in that order keeps the work tidy, keeps mess away from neighbouring fences and means you are not stepping over piles of soil for longer than necessary.

Real turf suits a family garden where children and pets use the grass and you like the feel of a living lawn. It needs a firm, level bed, and in a shaded corner behind a tall house it may thin out unless the ground is prepared well. We will tell you honestly where turf is likely to struggle in your plot and what can be done about it.
Artificial grass makes sense where shade, footfall or the wish for a lawn that needs no mowing rules out turf. It is laid over a compacted, levelled base with a weed membrane and proper edging so it stays flat. Drainage matters as much as the surface, particularly where heavy soil holds water, so the base is built to let rain move away.
Not every lawn needs to come up. If your Sparkhill grass is patchy, mossy or uneven but the roots are sound, scarifying to pull out thatch, levelling low spots and repairing bare patches can bring it back without starting again. We look at the lawn first, probe the ground and say plainly whether renovation will hold or fresh turf is the sounder choice. We also cover Hall Green and Small Heath.

Yes. We carry turf through the side passage or the house in rolls, and the old lawn and soil go out the same way. It takes a little more planning than an open garden, so we check the route and gate width when we first look at the job and plan the stages around it.
It can be, especially where the garden is shaded or used heavily. The key is the base: compacted, level, with a weed membrane and firm edging. On a small plot the finish is very visible, so we take care over the edges and the joins between sections.
Look at the roots and the ground. If the grass pulls up easily with no root, or the surface is hollow and uneven everywhere, replacement is usually better. If there is firm turf with moss, thatch or a few bare patches, scarifying and repair often works well.
