Birmingham gardens vary enormously, from narrow terrace yards to long suburban lawns with mature trees overhead. We lay turf, fit artificial grass, renovate worn lawns and cut sharp edges, adapting the work to whatever space and conditions you have rather than applying one routine to every garden in the city.
Whatever the size, ground preparation decides how the lawn turns out. We clear the old surface, deal with levels and drainage, and only then lay anything, so the finished grass sits on something firm and even. Skipping it is the most common reason new lawns disappoint.

In a compact Birmingham garden, a lawn has to work hard. It may be the only open ground for children, a dog or a table and chairs, which means compaction builds up quickly. We often find a thin crust of grass sitting over soil packed solid, with water running straight off the top. Breaking that up before laying anything is what stops the new lawn failing in the same places.
For larger suburban lawns the issue is different, with long runs of uneven ground and the odd hollow where water gathers. We level carefully across the whole area, because a lawn that looks flat from the house can feel very bumpy once the mower goes over it. We would rather spend the time on levels than leave you with a surface you cannot enjoy.

Birmingham is full of garden and street trees, and many lawns live in their shade. Moss, thin growth and bare patches follow, and no amount of seed will fix a spot that never gets any light. We look honestly at the conditions before recommending turf for a particular part of the garden. Sometimes the honest answer is that part of the lawn should not be grass at all.
In shaded or heavily used areas, artificial grass laid on a compacted, levelled base with edging and weed membrane is a practical choice. In brighter gardens, renovating with scarifying and repairs, or laying fresh turf, usually gives a better natural result and feels softer underfoot, particularly for children and pets. We will explain the trade-offs so that you can choose, and we can lay one surface in front and another at the back if that suits the garden.
Edging is the detail people notice. We cut clean lines where lawns meet borders, paths and patios throughout Birmingham, and fit edging where it will help the grass keep its shape. We also work in Edgbaston and Moseley, so tell us where you are and we can talk through the options for your garden. We are happy to look at edges alone.

Yes, access permitting. We bring turf through the house or side passage where needed, clear the old surface, level the ground and lay it carefully. Small gardens show every flaw, so the preparation matters even more there than in a large plot.
It can be, as it removes the moss and thatch that choke the grass. But if moss keeps returning because of shade or poor drainage, you will need to address that cause too, or consider a different surface altogether.
Yes. We lift the old turf, clear it from site, and prepare the soil underneath. Whether you then want new turf or artificial grass, starting from a clean, levelled base gives a much better result in the long run.
