Many Shirley houses, whether inter-war or later family homes, have long back gardens that run well beyond the patio. That is a lot of lawn to keep in shape, and conifers and hedges along the sides add shade and competition for water. We turf, renovate, scarify, level, fit artificial grass and edge for Shirley homeowners.
A long garden can have several different lawn conditions at once, such as a sunny top section, a mossy shaded middle and a worn path to the shed. We treat each area on its merits instead of applying one fix to the whole garden, which is how you get a lawn that looks even.

The sunny part of a long Shirley lawn may dry out and thin in summer, while the stretch under the conifers stays damp and mossy. We start by walking the whole length and noting where the problems are. Then we scarify, re-seed and top-dress the sections that need it, and leave the healthy areas alone. That way you only pay for the work the lawn genuinely needs.
Long gardens also settle unevenly, especially where old borders were turfed over or a shed or greenhouse once stood. We lift turf where the surface has dropped, add and firm soil, and relay it flush. Doing this section by section keeps the lawn usable while the work goes on, and the repairs soon blend in. Shirley gardens that have been reshaped over time are the ones most likely to show this.

If most of the lawn is weeds, bare patches and moss, replacement is the honest answer. We take off the old surface, loosen the compacted soil, rake in a level seedbed and lay fresh turf. On a long Shirley garden this is a bigger job, so we plan deliveries and work so that turf does not sit rolled up for long. That keeps the turf fresh and rooting quickly once it is down.
Artificial grass can be a sensible choice for the shadiest part of a long garden, or for a section the children use as a play area. We build a compacted base, level it, add edging and a weed membrane, and lay the grass. Mixing real and artificial lawn in one garden can work well when divided with a neat edge. Plenty of Shirley families like the practical side of it.
Along a long lawn, a crisp edge does a great deal for appearance. We cut clean lines against borders and paths, and can fit edging where grass keeps spreading. We also cover Hall Green, Solihull and Monkspath, so if you are in Shirley and want the whole garden looked at, get in touch. It keeps the whole lawn looking deliberate.

Yes. Plenty of long lawns are fine in one half and poor in the other. We repair or replace only the weak section, then blend it into the rest so the finished lawn looks even from the house.
We scarify the moss out, then look at the cause. Conifers shade the ground and dry it out, so growth stays poor. Lifting the lower branches, using shade-tolerant seed or switching that area to artificial grass usually works better.
When weeds, moss or bare soil cover most of the surface, or the ground is badly uneven, patching only delays the problem. A fresh start with proper preparation is then the better route. We will show you what we are seeing.
