Brierley Hill sits on hillier ground than much of the West Midlands, and that shapes how we approach a lawn here. Sloping gardens, uneven ground and wet patches are common, so our work covers turfing, artificial grass, scarifying, levelling, repairs and edging, always built around getting the ground right first.
Terraces and twentieth century estates each bring their own challenges, from tiny back yards to wide front lawns on a slope. We look at the shape of the garden and how water moves across it before we suggest anything at all.

A slope changes everything about a lawn. Water runs downhill and takes soil with it, the top of the garden dries out while the bottom stays soggy, and a mower can be awkward to push. In Brierley Hill we often have to reshape the ground gently before any grass goes on. We look at the garden from the house and from the bottom, because a slope can fool the eye until you stand on it.
That can mean cutting and filling to create a more even gradient, or forming a flatter area near the house with a smoother fall beyond it. We always make sure water has somewhere sensible to go, because turf laid on a surface that sheds water badly will wash out or turn to mud. Where the fall is steep we may suggest a flatter lawn area and a planted or edged bank, which is easier to maintain.

Not every Brierley Hill lawn needs replacing. If the base is reasonably level and the soil is sound, scarifying to clear moss and thatch, filling hollows and patching bare areas can transform a tired lawn without the cost and mess of starting again from nothing. Telling the two situations apart takes a proper look at the ground, so we check the levels and the soil before we suggest either.
Where the garden is steep, shaded or hard-worn, artificial grass can make more sense. We lay it over a compacted, levelled base with edging and weed membrane, with the old lawn removed first and drainage considered, so it stays flat and does not collect water underneath it. The edges are fixed down firmly, which matters on a slope where loose material would otherwise creep and ripple over time.
Gardens near the canal and the green corridors around Brierley Hill often feel damp and shaded, and edges are where lawns suffer most from roots and spreading beds. We cut clean borders and fit edging so the grass stays in its place. We also work in Kingswinford and Quarry Bank, if you are close by. Raised or sloping edges especially benefit from a firm, defined line.

Often, yes, but we look at the gradient first. Gentle slopes can be turfed after careful preparation. On steeper ground we may reshape the soil or suggest a different surface, because turf on a sharp slope can slip or dry out.
On a slope, water collects in the lowest spot, and compacted or heavy soil makes it worse. The answer is usually correcting levels and improving how the ground drains before any turf or artificial grass is laid there.
It depends on how uneven it is. Minor bumps and hollows can be dealt with by scarifying and filling. Larger problems mean lifting the lawn, reshaping the ground underneath and re-laying turf, which we can explain once we have seen it.
