Dudley is a hilly town, and its gardens show it. Older terraces, twentieth century estates and sloping plots near wooded ground all ask different things of a lawn. We lay turf, fit artificial grass, scarify, level and repair existing lawns and cut neat edges, always working out how the ground behaves before choosing the surface.
A lawn on a hill needs more thought than one on the flat. We look at the fall of the garden, the soil and the shade, and then give you a practical recommendation rather than a standard package that ignores the shape of your plot.

Every Dudley garden has its own quirks, from a bank beside the path to a patio that sits higher than the lawn. We stand in the garden first and look at how rain would run, where the ground is hard and where it is soft, and which spots stay in shade for most of the day. Doing this properly means we only quote for the work the garden needs, not a one-size package.
That walk round shapes the plan. A gentle slope might simply need smoothing, while a stepped or uneven plot might need a lawn laid on a levelled section with a clean edge to the slope. We prefer to solve the shape of the ground first, because grass on a poor base never settles. It also means any drainage problems are dealt with before they can spoil new grass.

Some parts of Dudley have wooded limestone ground, and gardens close to trees and rock can have thin, stony or uneven soil. Grass struggles in those conditions, and roots near the surface make the ground difficult to level cleanly with the usual methods. That is not a reason to give up on a lawn, but it does change what we do and how we lay the ground out.
In those gardens we clear stones and old roots where we sensibly can, improve the surface for turf and keep expectations realistic. Where real grass will not hold, artificial grass laid on a compacted, levelled base with edging and weed membrane gives a clean, even finish with good drainage beneath it. Sometimes the answer is a mix, with turf where the soil is deep enough and artificial grass where it is not.
Many older Dudley terraces have small, enclosed back gardens where a lawn must be neat to look right. We cut clean edges against walls, paths and borders, and can fit edging to hold the line. We also work in Brierley Hill and Netherton, so ask if you are nearby and want us to take a look. Compact lawns reward careful trimming and a sharp border.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.

In most cases, yes, once the ground has been prepared. We smooth the gradient, fill hollows and check drainage before laying turf. Very steep banks may be better edged or planted, and we will tell you if that is the case.
We clear surface stones and debris, improve the soil where we can and lay turf on a prepared bed. If the ground simply will not support grass, artificial grass over a compacted, levelled base is a sensible alternative.
If the base is level and the grass is mostly sound, repairs and scarifying are worth doing. If it is lumpy, patchy and full of weeds, lifting the lawn and starting again gives a better and longer-lasting result.
