Many Harborne gardens are generous in size, with inter-war and Victorian houses set back behind tall hedges and shaded by mature trees. That makes the lawn a big part of the picture, and it takes a real beating. We lay new turf, renovate tired grass, level uneven ground, fit artificial grass and cut crisp edges, all for Harborne homes.
Most of the lawns we are asked about are patchy, mossy or lumpy rather than beyond saving. Our first job is working out which one you have. Sometimes a good scarify and repair brings it back. Other times starting again is the honest answer, and we will tell you which before any work begins.

A lawn under tall hedges and old trees in Harborne often struggles for light, so moss and bare soil creep in. Scarifying pulls out the thatch and moss that choke the grass, then we re-seed thin areas and top-dress where the surface has worn down. It is hard work, but it often saves you the cost and disruption of lifting everything, and the lawn usually looks much better within a few weeks once the new growth fills in properly.
Levelling is the other common repair. Dips and bumps hold water, scalp under the mower and spoil the look of a long garden. We lift the turf in the affected area, fill or trim the soil to the right height, firm it, and relay the grass so it sits flush with the rest. Done carefully, you will not see where the repair was once it knits together.

When a lawn is too far gone, we clear the old grass and weeds, rake the soil to a fine, even tilth and roll out fresh turf. Ground preparation decides the result, which is why we spend most of our time on it. Laid on poor, compacted soil, even good turf looks tired and patchy before long. We also leave the new lawn lightly firm and level, ready for the first cut when it has rooted.
Some Harborne owners prefer artificial grass for shady corners or areas the family walks across daily. We remove the old lawn, build a compacted, levelled base, fit edging and a weed membrane, and lay the grass on top. Drainage is considered first, so the surface does not stay wet after rain. The result is a tidy, clean area that needs far less upkeep than a struggling lawn would.
A sharp edge makes a lawn look cared for. We cut clean lines against borders, paths and patios and can fit edging where grass keeps creeping over. If you are in Harborne and want a tidy garden to match, we also cover Edgbaston, Bearwood and Quinton, so just tell us where you are. We are happy to look at the whole garden and suggest what is worth doing first, rather than selling you more than you need.

If there is still a decent amount of living grass, scarifying, re-seeding and levelling the worst patches usually works. If it is mostly moss, weeds or bare soil, new turf is the better route. We look at it in person and give you a straight answer.
Shade does slow grass down, and many Harborne gardens have plenty of it. We can advise on shade-tolerant seed or turf, whether some light pruning would help, or whether artificial grass suits that corner better than a lawn that will always struggle.
We dig out the old lawn, lay and compact a stone base, level it carefully, add a weed membrane and fix edging round the border. Grass goes on last. Getting the base and drainage right matters far more than the grass itself.
