Long back gardens are one of the good things about living in Shirley, and long gardens mean long hedges. We cut and shape hedges for inter-war and later family homes here, bringing down the height, squaring the sides, leaving the tops level and taking all the waste away with us when we go.
Whether you want a single big tidy before summer or a regular visit to stop the garden slipping, we can fit in with that. We will look at the hedge first and tell you what we think it needs.

The rear boundary of a Shirley garden can be a very long run of privet, conifer or mixed hedging, and it is often more than one person wants to tackle with hand shears. We use powered cutters and set up access so the whole length can be done in a tidy, steady way, checking the line by eye as we move along.
Along a lengthy boundary, small errors show. A dip in the top or a lean in the face is obvious from the house. We take time to keep the line true and the thickness even, and we collect cuttings as we move on so the lawn is not buried. It is simple, careful work that pays off in how the garden looks.

Conifers are very common around the roads of Shirley, planted for privacy decades ago and now far taller than anyone intended. Reducing them is possible, but only within limits, because most will not regrow from bare wood. We cut into the green, in a sensible taper, and leave the base a little wider than the top so light gets in. That gives the hedge a fair chance to stay healthy.
Where a conifer has already gone too far, we will say so honestly and suggest options, including taking it out and planting something easier to keep in order. We also cover hedges in Monkspath and Cheswick Green, and across the border into Solihull, for anyone with a similar problem further along the road. Whichever way you go, we will not leave you with a half-finished hedge or a pile of waste to deal with.
We turn up, walk the hedge with you if you are at home, agree the height and width, and get on with it. Nests are checked for first. When the work is done in Shirley, the clippings are loaded, the lawn and paths are swept, and you can see the full line of the hedge from the house as it was meant to look.
Based in Hall Green, so we are never far from the gardens we work in.

As much as there is green growth to cut back to, and no more. Cutting into old brown wood usually leaves permanent gaps. We look at each hedge and mark the limit before cutting, so you know in advance what to expect.
In most gardens, yes. Long runs may take a full day or may be done in two visits, depending on height and density. We will tell you which when we have seen the hedge and agreed the work.
Move garden furniture, plant pots and anything fragile away from the hedge, and make sure we can reach it through a gate or side path. We cover the rest, including sheets for borders and a full sweep afterwards.
