Running bamboo spreads through long underground rhizomes that travel outward from the parent plant, sending up new canes as they go. Clumping bamboo, by contrast, grows in a tighter, more contained root mass that expands slowly outward from the base, rather than sending runners across the garden.

From above ground, the two can look fairly similar, especially when young — which is part of why so many homeowners don't realise which type they have until it's already spreading.

How to Tell Which Type You Have

• Check how far new canes are appearing from the main clump — wide spacing usually points to a running variety
• Look for canes emerging through lawns, gravel or paving some distance from the original planting
• Clumping varieties tend to form a dense, slowly-widening base rather than scattered individual canes
• Species name on the original plant label, if you still have it, is the most reliable indicator
