Not all bamboo behaves the same way, and the distinction between running and clumping varieties matters far more than most people realise when it comes to deciding what to do about it.
The Key Difference: Root Systems, Not Appearance
Running bamboo spreads through long underground rhizomes that travel outward from the parent plant, sending up new canes as they go. Clumping bamboo, by contrast, grows in a tighter, more contained root mass that expands slowly outward from the base, rather than sending runners across the garden.
From above ground, the two can look fairly similar, especially when young — which is part of why so many homeowners don't realise which type they have until it's already spreading.
How to Tell Which Type You Have
- Check how far new canes are appearing from the main clump — wide spacing usually points to a running variety
- Look for canes emerging through lawns, gravel or paving some distance from the original planting
- Clumping varieties tend to form a dense, slowly-widening base rather than scattered individual canes
- Species name on the original plant label, if you still have it, is the most reliable indicator
- When in doubt, a specialist can usually identify the type on a site visit
Why Running Bamboo Causes the Most Problems
Because running bamboo's rhizomes can travel several metres in the right conditions, it's the variety most likely to cause boundary disputes, damage to paving, and the frustrating experience of new shoots appearing somewhere you never planted anything.
Does Clumping Bamboo Ever Need Removing?
Sometimes, yes. Even clumping bamboo can eventually outgrow its space, and older clumps can develop a genuinely substantial root mass that's still a significant excavation job, even without the same spreading risk.
Our Approach to Both Types
We identify the species and root behaviour on our initial site visit, and explain exactly what that means for your removal — because a running bamboo problem and a clumping bamboo problem aren't quite the same job.
Ready for bamboo removal done properly, roots and all? That's exactly what we do as standard.
